We Went to a Japanese Gay Bar in Shinjuku Nichome

The Brief

A Boy's Bar visit that accidentally became one of the most effective gay Japan travel documents on YouTube — because the hosts genuinely didn't know what they were walking into.

The top comment (242 likes) reads: 'I love how they casually talk about prostitution and then start Karaoke singing' — one sentence that captures why 190k people watched.

The unscripted discovery of the escort profile book at 2:26 — with real on-camera surprise and the owner voluntarily showing his own page — created a moment no planned script could manufacture.

Watch outEngagement at 1.9% is modest for a niche travel video; comments skew heavily toward aspiration ('can't wait to go') rather than repeat viewers, suggesting low loyalty conversion.

Multiple commenters are actively saving up to visit Japan specifically because of this video — does the channel have a travel guide product to capture that intent?

Summary

The creators visit Boy's Bar, a gay bar on the third floor of a building in Shinjuku Nichome, Tokyo's largest gay district, during the COVID-19 pandemic. They obtain permission from the owner (Taku-san) to film inside, discover the bar also offers an escort service with a profile book, and spend roughly two hours there drinking and doing karaoke. The visit is framed as a lighthearted introduction to Nichome's bar scene for viewers unfamiliar with it.

  • ·Shinjuku Nichome is described as the central and largest gay district in Japan, with around 300 bars.
  • ·The visit takes place during COVID-19 restrictions; the creators note the restrictions have been lifted but people are still being cautious and wearing masks.
  • ·Due to reduced foot traffic from the pandemic, the creators plan to visit random bars to see which will allow entry and filming.
  • ·They choose Boy's Bar specifically because a prior visit showed it assigns a staff member to each customer to chat and make them feel welcome.
  • ·The bar owner, Taku-san, grants permission to film, noting that women are also welcome to visit in person.
  • ·The bar has hand sanitizer on tables as a COVID precaution.
  • ·The creators discover Boy's Bar also operates an escort service, with a profile book of available men.
  • ·Profiles in the book include physical details, stated sexual role preferences (top/bottom, marked as practiced or still learning), and blood type.
  • ·The owner explains that blood type is included because some customers have preferences or prejudices regarding blood type.
  • ·Services listed include standard bookings, outdoor dates, in-call visits, threesomes, and a rotation/swap option allowing customers to book two escorts consecutively rather than simultaneously.
  • ·Fewer escorts are available that evening due to reduced demand during the pandemic.
  • ·Taku-san shows the creators his own old profile page from when he first joined, joking about outdated details such as age and stated role preference.
  • ·The conversation shifts briefly to COVID-19 statistics; the creators and Taku-san discuss how rising positive-case numbers reflect increased testing rather than necessarily a worsening outbreak.
  • ·The group does karaoke at the bar; one creator (Andrew) sings a Ken Hirai song and is gently ribbed for his performance.
  • ·The creators spent approximately 2,000 JPY each for roughly two hours at the bar, describing themselves as budget-conscious.

Summary

Two gay men walk into Shinjuku Nichome during COVID and talk their way into filming inside a Boy's Bar — a hostess-style venue staffed by male escorts. The bar owner, Taku-san, volunteers his own escort profile for the camera, walking them through the booking menu including swaps, threesomes, and a column for sexual preferences still listed as 'practicing.' The visit ends with karaoke at roughly 2,000 JPY each for two hours.

The hook

weak

Opening 15 seconds — the bit that decides whether a viewer keeps watching.

[0:00] Hi guys [0:02] Hi everyone~ [0:03] So we are here in Shinjuku Nichome, which is the central gay area in Japan. [0:09] It is the biggest gay district in Japan. [0:12] It has around 300 bars. [0:14] We always come here to hang out with our friends, [0:17] but, due to the Corona Virus, I don't think there will be many people (out tonight).

Assessment

Opens with dual greetings before slowly unpacking COVID context and location background — the escort-menu discovery that dominated the comment section (242-like top comment) is not hinted at anywhere in the first 15 seconds. Against the channel's other videos this is a weaker entry; the single hard stat ('300 bars') is the only detail that earns its place.

Hook rewrites

Three alternative openings, each in a different archetype. Each is under 40 words — completable in 15 seconds.

Rewrite №1 · investigatortechnique: lead_with_outcome

Shinjuku Nichome has 300 gay bars. We got camera access to one — and the owner slid an escort profile book across the table that we were not prepared for.

WhyFront-loads the discovery that generated the top-liked comment instead of saving it for 2:30 into the video.

Rewrite №2 · experimentertechnique: add_specificity

We tried walking into random bars in Tokyo's 300-bar gay district with a camera, mid-COVID, no plan — and accidentally found something no travel guide mentions.

WhyFrames the visit as an unscripted trial with a concrete payoff tease, matching the video's spontaneous discovery tone.

Rewrite №3 · stakeholdertechnique: identity_callout

If you've ever wondered what it's actually like inside Tokyo's gay bars — we got rare filming access to Shinjuku Nichome and found a lot more than just drinks.

WhyDirectly addresses the 33% of commenters sharing personal travel plans and LGBTQ curiosity about Japan, converting passive browsers into invested viewers.

Title gap & rewrites

Gap 64 · undersell

The title treats the visit itself as the event; commenters treat the escort-menu discovery, profile stats (dick size, top/bottom practice status), and blood-type conversation as the actual payoff — none of that is signalled. The top-liked comment's framing ('casually talk about prostitution then start Karaoke') is essentially the pitch the title never made.

What viewers reacted to

Each comment theme mapped to the transcript moment that sparked it.

Praise and channel engagement

The opening framing (casual, first-person, 'we always come here') and the relaxed wrap-up after paying ~2,000 JPY established a warm, accessible tone that drove subscription comments throughout.

Sponsor fit

Build first · 74/100

What a brand or agency would see evaluating this video — which sponsors to pitch, why, what to charge, and what's safe.

This is a high-intent travel-planning audience, not passive viewers: at least 18 comments state concrete plans to visit Japan ("planning to travel to Japan someday", "saving up so once Corona is over I'm going to finally visit", "first place for my vacation"), and several unprompted requests ask the creators to recommend hotels, bars, and a translator/guide — that is purchase-referral behaviour a brand can convert directly. Ad tolerance looks high (warm, grateful tone, multiple "just subscribed" conversions) but is untested since the channel has run no integrations yet and openly says "we don't have many viewers," so trust is proven while sponsor mechanics are not. The mismatch — strong buy-intent, unproven monetization — is why this is a build-first audience worth a low-risk first integration rather than a premium pitch.

Integration rate
$5,500–$7,500
60-90s mid-roll
Dedicated video
$9,000–$12,500
full sponsored video
Basis: Roughly 190,000 people watched this video, and a 60-90 second sponsor read inside it would typically sell for $5,500-$7,500. The number is high for the view count because the audience is unusually valuable to the right brand: they aren't just watching, they're actively planning to fly to Japan and are asking you for hotels, guides, and bars — so a travel brand can turn views into bookings. A dedicated standalone video runs $9,000-$12,500 because all the attention goes to one sponsor. The main thing holding the rate from going higher is that the channel hasn't run sponsorships yet, so a brand is betting on unproven conversion.
Brands to pitch
AiraloTravel eSIM18+ comments state firm Japan-visit plans; Airalo is the #1 travel-niche YouTube sponsor and an eSIM is the exact first purchase an inbound traveler makes
misterb&bLGBTQ-friendly accommodationqr9995 and others ask outright for hotel/stay recommendations in Shinjuku Nichome; misterb&b is the LGBTQ-specific Airbnb and maps 1:1 onto this gay-travel audience
KlookJapan tours & experiencesGaymurai asks to 'buy a translator/guide so we don't get lost,' and AjayAjay/4cristobal/qr9995 request bar and venue recs — Klook sells exactly these Japan experience bookings
BabbelLanguage learningMultiple viewers are learning Japanese (dillydilly19 'gay trans guy who's learning Japanese') and several ask for Japanese subtitles they can't read — direct language-gap signal
PimsleurSpoken-language learningConversation-heavy bar content + viewers wanting to talk to locals fits Pimsleur's audio/spoken focus better than flashcard apps
SafetyWingNomad/travel insuranceAudience skews young international travelers planning multi-week Japan trips; SafetyWing is the default travel-niche insurance sponsor for this demographic
WiseMulti-currency travel moneyCross-border audience (Brazil, Australia, US, Europe comments) spending JPY on a trip; Wise is a standing travel-creator sponsor for FX/spending abroad
SurfsharkVPN (LGBTQ-friendly)Surfshark actively sponsors LGBTQ and travel creators and is brand-safe with adult-adjacent content; audience travels and streams region-locked media (Sailor Moon/anime references)
Avoid
  • Family/kids & conservative CPG brandsVideo openly tours an escort/prostitution menu (threesomes, NSFW marker) — risk-averse mainstream advertisers will reject the adjacency even though the audience is fine with it
  • Alcohol & hookup/dating appsBar + escort context plus regional ad-law sensitivity and any under-age viewers makes alcohol/hookup ads a disclosure and platform-policy risk
  • Crypto/gambling/get-richTrust is the whole asset here; speculative finance ads would burn the grateful, earnest tone this audience responds to
How to integrate

A 60-90s mid-roll read placed right after the Boy's Bar tour (~3:30) where travel curiosity peaks — this trusting audience tolerates an integrated read far better than a pre-roll, but won't yet support a full dedicated video.

Brand safety
Toxicity
Clean — overwhelmingly warm and grateful; only isolated trolls ('Dishonorabu bar', 'Stupid Mask') with near-zero engagement
Controversy
Content (not comments) carries adjacency risk: on-camera discussion of paid escort services, a 'NSFW' segment, and indoor smoking — no FTC/disclosure or copyright-strike signals detected, but conservative advertisers may decline
Audience conduct
High on-topic rate, but one spam account (@alexandrolele1103) flooded ~10 comments with phone number/Facebook/WhatsApp contact details — delete and ban; otherwise negligible troll rate

Why it could lift
  • +Positive sentiment ~85% with a strong fan-to-critic ratio (242-like top comment is pure delight, not critique)
  • +High curiosity tone — repeated questions about escort menus, blood-type prejudice, and 'are these services legal?' signal active engagement, not passive viewing
  • +Multiple long story-share comments (a 1969-1972 Nichome regular; a German tour-group recollection) drive thread depth and dwell
  • +Strong subscriber-conversion language in comments ('instantly obsessed', 'subscribed!', 'binge watching since I discovered you') indicates the video recruits, not just entertains
  • +Evergreen, search-friendly topic (gay travel to Japan / Shinjuku Nichome) with durable intent demand beyond the upload window
Why it might stall
  • 1.9% engagement is solid but not breakout — not enough to force a viral push on its own
  • Escort/NSFW content adjacency can trigger limited ad-suitability, suppressing the monetized-impression promotion loop
  • Several comments complain the bar was barely shown ('didn't see much of the bar', 'no atmosphere') — a satisfaction drag on retention
  • Missing English subtitles on the Japanese dialogue (4+ explicit requests) likely caps watch-time for non-Japanese speakers mid-video
  • COVID-era framing dates the video and limits its shareability as a current travel reference

If u are a trans man its possible to go to those bars?

Why: Unanswered practical question with high relevance — given the 33% of comments about personal plans and representation, this deserves a public answer that other trans viewers will find
Draft reply

Yes! Boy's Bar actually said women are welcome too, so trans men absolutely can go — Nichome in general is one of the most inclusive areas in Tokyo. Taku-san was super welcoming to everyone, so just walk in and enjoy 🙌

dillydilly19 · high↗ view

As a gay trans guy who's learning Japanese and wants to visit, it's great to see some representation in the media and personal experience being gay in japan. Thanks so much !

Why: Devoted fan from an underrepresented group — a reply here signals to the whole comment section that the channel sees and values LGBTQ+ viewers beyond just gay men
Draft reply

This means so much to read — Nichome is genuinely one of the most welcoming places we've ever been, and we think you'd have a brilliant time. Let us know when you make it there!

Gaymurai · high↗ view

First video; instantly obsessed. When my partner and I go to Japan we want to buy a translator/guide so that we don't get lost or in trouble! If one of us is allergic to shellfish and peanuts do you advise even going to Japan where everything they serve includes these common ingredients? Thank you!!!

Why: Two unanswered questions in one — translator/guide offer and a genuine safety concern about food allergies; new subscriber worth landing
Draft reply

Shellfish and sesame are everywhere in Japanese cooking, so an allergy card in Japanese (アレルギーカード) is a must — most restaurants will take it seriously. For getting around, Google Translate camera mode is honestly your best friend in Nichome. Happy to help more if you have questions!

rl0001 · high↗ view

That is interesting there are people who are prejudiced against certain blood types, I've never heard of that before. Do you happen to know why that is?

Why: Unanswered factual question that many Western viewers clearly share — a reply doubles as evergreen content that will keep surfacing
Draft reply

Blood type personality theory (血液型占い) is huge in Japan — similar to how horoscopes work in the West. Type A is seen as anxious and uptight, B as selfish, O as outgoing, AB as unpredictable. It's mostly light-hearted but some people genuinely factor it into dating!

4cristobal · high↗ view

More vids on bars/venues! Are the 'special menu items' legal or a grey area?

Why: Unanswered question about legality that many viewers are clearly curious about — a clear public answer adds genuine value and positions the channel as knowledgeable
Draft reply

Grey area is probably the honest answer — sex work in Japan exists in a legal grey zone (paid penetrative sex is technically illegal but enforcement is very limited and escort services operate openly). We'll do a deeper dive on this in a future video!

AjayAjay-ig3it · medium↗ view

Hey, can you recommend any bars wheee older guys go ?

Why: Unanswered practical question — a short, helpful reply keeps the commenter engaged and signals the channel is welcoming to all ages
Draft reply

A few spots in Nichome cater to an older crowd — Advocates Cafe is a great starting point since it's relaxed and mixed. Happy to make a dedicated video on this if there's enough interest!

beebenjoe · medium↗ view

This is a dumb question from someone with no idea of the escort business but I'm just gonna ask anyway. So the escort's peepee sizes are included and they also wrote if they're top or bottom, so does thay mean if you hire one you get to have sex with them? Or the profiles are more like a "get your imagination running wild" thing and the profiles are just there to suit the clients preference without having sex?

Why: Self-deprecating, clearly genuine question that dozens of viewers probably have but didn't ask — a frank, non-judgmental reply will get likes
Draft reply

Not a dumb question at all! From what Taku-san explained, the profiles are for the full escort experience — the physical details are there because they're genuinely relevant to what's on offer. Japan's escort industry operates in a legal grey area but very openly!

studywid · medium↗ view

Is there any lesbian bar?

Why: Unanswered question with broad appeal — a quick answer extends the channel's welcoming reputation beyond gay men
Draft reply

Yes! Nichome has a small but great lesbian bar scene — Goldfinger is the most famous one and runs women-only and lesbian nights. Definitely worth looking up before you visit!

richardauchmoody6248 · medium↗ view

Shinjuku Nichome has changed a bit since I was there 1969-1972. There were just a few gay bars back then. The ones I remember are Shire, Regent, Sazai, Mako and 995. These were known as gaisen (foreigner) bars where foreigners who liked Japanese and Japanese who liked foreigners would go. I doubt any of them still exist. Back then the gay bars were very formal. If someone liked you they would send you a drink to show their interest. There were no gay discos back then but there was a dance bar that sort of turned gay after midnight. Interesting time to be gay in Japan.

Why: Rare historical firsthand account with 102 likes — engaging this comment boosts it further and shows the channel values its older audience
Draft reply

This is incredible — thank you so much for sharing this. The idea of Nichome in 1969 with formal bars and drink-sending as a signal is so vivid. We'd genuinely love to do a history-of-Nichome video someday and this kind of first-hand memory is exactly what we'd want in it.

jacobalexander7642 · medium↗ view

I am highly upset that I've never seen this channel before! 😤😤 This had 👏me rolling 👏 I'm like this is all a typical brunch conversation with my friends 🤣🤣❤️❤️ subscribed!

Why: New enthusiastic subscriber with high energy — a personal reply converts a one-time viewer into a loyal fan
Draft reply

We are exactly a brunch conversation that somehow got a YouTube channel, so that tracks completely 😂 Welcome — so glad you found us!

Dungeon_Ted · medium↗ view

Omg thank you for this! Tbh I've always been curious about these kinds of places in nichome (and of course I've walked past this one countless times over the last ten years), but I never had the guts to go in. We should all go together some time

Why: Likely a Japan-based viewer and potential real-world connection — community-building reply, low effort high reward
Draft reply

Ten years of walking past and never going in — that's what we're here for! Seriously though, next time we go we should make it a group thing, let us know 😄

qr9995 · low↗ view

Hi, ❤️ your channel, great job, would be great if you can recommend some hotels or places to stay in SHINJUKU NICHOME , Tokyo will be my first place to have my vacation when the Covid-19 is over, Love to see more video about bars and Japan's bar boys information ℹ️🙏🙏

Why: Unanswered practical travel question — a reply is useful and keeps the channel positioned as a go-to resource for LGBTQ+ Japan travel
Draft reply

The Shinjuku area has loads of good options — staying in Shinjuku proper puts you a short walk from Nichome. We'll try to do a full accommodation guide soon but in the meantime Booking.com filtered to Shinjuku will set you up well!

Clip & Shorts finder

Moments worth cutting into Shorts — each with a title and a ready hook line. Timestamps link to the video.

[2:26] ↗We accidentally found escorts at a Japanese gay bar~45s
HookWait, what? You run an escort service here?
The pivot from a normal bar visit to discovering an escort menu is the video's most-reacted-to moment — @YoBoyMarcus's top comment (242 likes) is entirely about this tonal whiplash, making it the clip viewers most want to share
[3:29] ↗His escort profile says he's 'still practicing'~35s
HookSays here that this boy is still practising to be a Top
The escort profile reveal — complete with dick size and blood type — is absurdly funny and self-contained; commenters like @ooi898 (50 likes) riffed on the blood-type detail, showing this moment had independent viral pull
[4:06] ↗A Japanese escort just admitted he can't bottom~20s
HookWait, are you still practicing? You're still practicing to be a bottom?
Taku-san's candid 'I can't bottom!' is the single most quotable line in the video — short, shocking, funny — perfect Short punchline with a hard cut after his answer
[3:01] ↗A Japanese gay bar menu includes THREESOMES?!~25s
HookThreesomes!
Andrew's escalating reaction from 'outdoor dates' to 'THREESOMES!' is a textbook reaction Short — pure energy, no context needed, stops the scroll immediately
[5:42] ↗We did karaoke at a Japanese gay bar and it went badly~40s
HookAndrew is normally much better than this. He must be nervous...
The karaoke scene is warm, self-deprecating, and shows real chemistry — @davidmorales8065, @tylerch8, @palacioed17, @Dancerboy86, and @wolfegod all commented specifically on the music, showing this moment lands with a broad audience
[0:03] ↗300 gay bars in one neighbourhood — inside Tokyo's Nichome~30s
HookSo we are here in Shinjuku Nichome, which is the biggest gay district in Japan. It has around 300 bars.
The '300 bars' stat is the kind of fact that makes people stop scrolling (@DoubtingThomas89: 'Did he say 300 bars??? I need to go there') — works as a pure information hook for travel-curious audiences
[1:48] ↗Asking a Japanese bar owner if we can film inside~35s
HookWe have a YouTube channel where we introduce gay life to viewers.
The permission-asking scene builds low-key tension, then resolves warmly — shows the channel's authentic behind-the-scenes access and the welcoming nature of Nichome, both of which commenters consistently praise
[4:00] ↗Japan has blood-type discrimination — even in dating~30s
HookYes, we make sure to put that in. Some people are prejudiced against people with certain blood types.
Multiple commenters (@rl0001, @Cerulean0987, @ooi898) were genuinely surprised by the blood-type detail — it's an educational Japan-culture hook that travels well beyond the LGBTQ+ niche to general Japan-interest audiences
