Discrimination against someone for not being native citizen is wrong no matter how you slice it.
The obsession with making excuses for Japans backwardness is always incredible to me. If this literally happened in any other country you’d think completely different… you’d say there’s NEVER an excuse to ban foreigners in America from a business but then in Japan we have to spen…
In the US it’s illegal to discriminate based off race. It doesn’t stop some businesses from making their establishments unwelcoming to people of a certain background but it’s illegal.
In the US, "no foreigners" would violate the 1964 Civil Rights. In the US, you can "refuse service to anyone," but NOT on the basis of race, religion, sex, or national origin.
As a Black American, I can tell you that laws against discrimination in the US are a joke. Please don't hold the country up as a beacon. We been fighting for centuries.
Not much of a reason to travel to a place that doe not want you there !
During my time in Tokyo, (mid 90s) my Japanese friend and I went to akihabara to buy electronics. When I entered the store I was stopped by an employee and asked to leave. Then my friend said I was with him, and then was allowed to shop but was watched very carefully by the staff…
I lived in Tokyo in the 1980s, and honestly it felt tougher back then than it does now. Japan has long had a complicated relationship with outsiders, but it didn’t mar my experience. I went in prepared, lived in my own little bubble, and built a life with people who welcomed me. …
The funny thing is that, in practice, it isn't strictly "no foreigners", it's: "no people who can't pass for Japanese in both appearance and language ability". These establishments aren't checking IDs. I know Chinese people who've lived in Japan for a long time for (over a decade…
my partner and I went to a bath house in Japan and they told me I was too old! How's that for discrimination!
Guys, the point is that this is 100% discrimination. And the fact that it is Japan doesn't make this more fancy or less ashaming.
Unpopular take but it's often a privilege to be able to have an audience to listen to you discuss these issues - most disabled folk wouldn't even get an explanation. Many countries don't have gay bars. I'd also argue that when body types and races are factored into gay prejudice…
I've been denied entry even to places I've already been before in the past only couple years ago
The Fridge of Doom strikes again revealing two mysterious visitors. 😁
When I lived in Japan, 30 YEARS AGO, this type of behavior happened. I see Japan has not progressed at all.
They didn’t edit it out lol 11:57
In Brazil, there's law against this kind of discrimination in commerce, but depending on the owners, discrimination does occurs but veiled, rejecting with small actions, like lazy work or some angry attitude.
Hey a festive treat - not the discrimination but a new upload.
Japanese society is a frustrating one, it might be a safe relatively safe country, but if safety comes with mental health cost there, everyhting is tied to old traditions.
I'd like to see the reaction of the Japanese if someone opened a store in Tokyo and put a sign on the door saying "No Japanese allowed".
Foreigners (especially Europeans) talk so much crap about how bad the U.S. is, especially with Trump back in office. Yet so many countries are flat-out discriminatory and hostile to people for speaking different languages, being tourists, wearing different clothing, their religio…
I think it's absolutely fine to have exclusive spaces for Japanese or I'm any case natives of whatever country. But it becomes an issue when you are restricting others from succeeding or living. It's not a great feeling and doesn't work for me but if you want to keep a particular…
This conversation about the language being a barrier is kinda odd to me since: 1- Japan is a higly touristic place, and on the major touristic cities should have some accomodations to tourists that being an english menu/staff. 2 - As a brazilian people who come from abroad also e…
Off topic, but I've also heard white, gay American men--on the whole--can be extremely discriminatory against Asian men on dating apps.
Knowing what bathhouse it is would be helpful, so foreigners can know to stay away and NOT waste our time
As a tourist/foreigner you cant do anything about the discriminatory laws/practices. So just go to a country where you would be welcome. Stop visiting Japan.
When I was going to clubs in the 80s there was a really hot bar that everyone wanted to go to and when my friends and I got the chance to go to this place there was a hand written paper note on the front door that said "Private party" and we were disappointed because we thought w…
I have seen enough notices in Western countries saying, (at the door), "The management reserves the right to refuse admission. So it's not only in Japan.
When I was living in Japan as a Japanese guy seeing those signs saying "No foreigners" at gay bars and what not, that made me upset and I had told the staff at a bar about it but no good response. But some gay bar Mama-san mentioned about it on Youtube before that some businesses…
I am going to be that Pharagraph guy, so you are warned. And if anything I am saying is not factually correct, I would love to hear your counterarguments. This entire conversation is about how they are trying to excuse Japan for its discriminatory polices. Which is completely f…
It’s a bit of a historical cultural trait that when the Japanese feel insecure or threatened as a nation, the response is insular isolation so they can regain control. Does it work in the modern world? That remains to be seen.
I feel like having someone who is black included in a discussion like this and hearing from their perspective would be useful in this discussion especially on how western prejudice and prejudice in Japan compare to your own experiences
Americans don’t realize how unique the civil rights amendments around the world. They are under attack right now and it’s incumbent on everyone to wake up and fight before it’s too late.
Ming is projecting certain Chinese sentiments towards Japanese I think when talking about “reversed economic position” and even “ jealousy “ of Japanese people towards foreigners. Do you really think that’s what Japanese people feel about Chinese people? jealous ? Hmmm perha…
a lot of small eateries in Japan are run by ONE person, one person (or maybe 2) doing everything, cooking, cashier, washing dishes. I've heard a lot of small shop owners in Tokyo complain about foreign Western tourists , how they're entitled, demanding and rude. Also I've seen fo…
Unrelated topic, maybe get someone to look over your subtitles because the French subs gendered you all as girls lmao
Well. This video was disappointing. The USA is not really a great reference when talking about discrimination. There is a whole world out there with much better examples of co existence!
it's not just the language. it's also whether you can behave like japanese, and Andrew clearly doesn't (not saying it in a negative way). i hate it, but i also like it that they're so protective of their culture. otherwise japan will just slowly become just another metro city.
