Shenzhen local here, Ben. So for some of your questions, or doubts.
First off, cameras are for building a safety net, and since the government isn't installing any of these inside someone else's home, there would be no privacy issue imo, like, what kinda privacy you want to hav…
When I was in Shenzhen in 1993, all you could see is dirt roads, mud and sand everywhere. People were selling random things and begging for money on both sides of many streets. And now we have this. The speed of development is unlike anything we have ever seen in the history of t…
When I was in Shenzhen I was really surprised and overwhelmed! I always thought that China is a country I woild never visit cause I had a prejudice about the country. When I saw Shenzhen the technology, the cleaness on the street, how affordable everything was, I felt immediately…
I grew up in Shenzhen and have been living in Germany for 20 years. Last month, I was in Ibiza for the Christmas holidays. At every intersection in the center of Sant Antoni, there stood a man or a woman with dishonest eyes. There were no surveillance cameras. There were only thi…
To me it seems like china is ahead of the US in many ways. It’s also so safe over there. Every time i go to china, i feel incredibly safe and there is also so much to do and see. In the US, it’s so boring and many places having shootings and crime.
What I liked the most is how quiet the streets are and how you can walk on the sidewalk without worrying that you're inhaling exhaust fume laden air, because they're all electric. I imagine you can live next to the street and not worry too much about noise or air quality.

I have been in Shenzhen for 4 months last year and it was really amazing experience. About the cameras, you forget it very fast and it provides safety.
EN10:09 Some of these cameras are traffic cameras for capturing vehicle violations; the others are for public security. And most of these cameras aren't for real-time monitoring but for continuous recording. If a crime occurs, the police will check the footage. I used to go to Shenzhen often around 2004. It was very unsafe back then, with lots of theft and robbery. The difference from now is like night and day. Besides the spread of surveillance, the efficiency of the police system is also crucial. If the police aren't responsible, cameras alone are useless.
Whats crazy is that a Waymo costs around $30 for a 10 minute ride in San Fransisco whereas the chinese one was only $0.85. Goes to show that China is not only advanced but also quite affordable!
For those who are worry of these cameras installed at all over the place, ask yourself, if you are not a criminal or is planning to do something illegal etc, what's the problem ?
Worrying losing your privacy ?? Everyday there are thousands of people walking on the street/public…
I am a Chinese living in Spain, and I miss China's surveillance cameras. I think Spain should also install more surveillance cameras because two days ago my car window was smashed and my laptop was stolen in the parking lot of a fancy restaurant in La Moraleja during lunch. a wea…
Hi Ken, I love your videos and your always fair and balanced judgement. I still remember your trip to Sanya, Hainan Island, where you noticed a bunch of car keys just casually left on the beach promenade and your very wry comment : "this only happens in China". 😃Greetings from t…
Almost once in a month I visit china especially Shenzhen but still amazed ..china really another level. Just today left Shenzhen via Shenzhen bay port 🤩
I always laugh when Westerners question surveillance cameras as if they were spying on them. Yet they whip out their mobile phones for texts, browsing, banking, photos and think they arent being watched 😅
Love your work Kenny ! China is incredible ... i have been many times and am doing the Urumqi to Chengdu train later this year. Nanjing my favourite so far out of 30 cities.
